About 1 million Hawaiians inhabit the seven main islands. Only 10% of them are Polynesians, 33% are Japanese, 25% Chinese, 14% are people from the Philippines, 12% are white and 6% from elsewhere. More than 75% of the inhabitants live on the island of Oahu, the third biggest island, with the buzzing capital of the state of Hawaii.
Hawaiians are friendly people. Their smile welcomes the stranger. The famous greeting "Aloha" which implies friendship, love and peaceableness, means "hello" and "farewell" is a sign of good will kike the Lei, the floral necklace made of orchids, leaves, berries and shells, which you get around your neck at many occasions.
Unfortunately this nice gesture has degenerated into commerciality in the tourist business. In the same way in which the Hula, originally a fertility rite dedicated to the gods was turned into a tourist attraction . Missionaries had regarded this dance as pagan and indecent. For this reason they saw to it that a law was made forbidding this dance. 30 years ago the Hawaiians started to revive their original culture and opened the first Hula schools for Polynesians.
